Water resources can be divided into domestic water, industrial water, and agricultural water, and the latter including irrigation water, livestock water and aquaculture water. The water source includes groundwater (river water and reservoir water), underground water, recycled water and sea freshwater. However, besides groundwater and underground water, other water sources were only demonstrated here but not included in the water consumption statistics. The water consumption statistics were classified according to water sources and the regions (the north, center, south, east, and island regions). The annual report of water consumption includes “The Statistic Report of Domestic Water Consumption”, “The Statistic Report of Industrial Water Consumption between Purposes”, “The Statistic Report of Agricultural Water Consumption”, “The Statistic Report of Water Consumption”, and “The Statistic Report of Water Storage Facilities Operation”. In this project, the Statistic Database of Water Consumption was also renewed to provide the latest information for the public, government, and academia.
According to the water consumption estimation, the statistics of water consumption in 2024 are shown as follow:
1. The water consumption in Taiwan in 2024 was 15.59 billion m3. The domestic, industrial and agricultural, water consumption accounted for 20.38%,10.05%, and 69.57%, respectively. For the comparison, the total water consumption in 2023 was 14.43 billion m3, and the domestic, industrial and agricultural, water consumption accounted for 21.70%, 10.05%, and 68.25%, respectively. The water consumption in 2024 increased by 1.17 billion m3, and the percentages of various water consumption objects did not change obviously.
2. The domestic water consumption in 2024 was 3.18 billion m3. Among the consumption, 3.06 billion m3 were from the tap water, 30.52 million m3 were from simply-constructed tap water systems, and 86.13 million m3 were from other sources. The prevailing rate of tap water has reached 95.78%. The rank of domestic water consumption is the North regions (47.67%), the Center regions (24.64%) and the South regions (24.58%). In comparison, the domestic water consumption in 2023was 3.13 billion m3; therefore, the consumption in 2023 increased by 48.27 million m3.
3. Rarding the industial water consumption, the method of estimating water consumption was changed since 2020. The original estimation method was based on the fixed daily water consumption per industrial area, which was established in 1983. However, since 2020, the water consumption was estimated by the available water consumption data in every targeted year. The industrial water consumption in 2024 was 1.57 billion m3, and the rank of water consumption between regions is the South regions (37.37%),Center regions (35.58%), followed by the North regions (25.03%).
4. The agricultural water consumption in 2024 was 10.85 billion m3. Among the amount, 10.05 billion m3 was irrigation water, accounting for 92.58% of total agricultural water consumption; the aquaculture waterand 0.72 billion m3 accounting for 6.60% of total agricultural water consumption; the livestock water was 89.20 million m3 accounting for 0.82% of total agricultural water consumption. The rank of water consumption is the Center regions (41.56%), the South regions (24.34%), the East regions (20.21%), and the North regions (13.82%).
In comparison, the agricultural water consumption in 2023 was 9.85 billion m3. Among the amount, 9.03 billion m3 was irrigation water, the aquaculture water was 0.73 billion m3 and and the livestock water were 91.28 million, the consumption in 2024 increased by 1.00 billion cubic meters, primarily due to the increase in irrigation water usage.
5. There are 95 official reservoirs in Taiwan, and the effective capacity in total was 1.99 billion m3 in 2024. The distribution of effective capacity by region is as follows: Southern region (38.29%), Central region (29.53%), and Northern region (31.61%). The water provided for irrigation was 2.88 billion m3, and 3.81 billion m3 was for industrial and public purposes. The water supplied for hydroelectricity was 17.54 billion m3 (the amount drawn from reservoirs for power generation, not the actual consumption).
6. From the year 2020 to 2024, Taiwan’s total water consumption ranged from 14.4 to 16.7 billion cubic meters. The percentage distribution of total water consumption is as follows: Northern region (21.84%~ 26.05%), Central region (34.11% ~37.74%), Southern region (21.55% ~ 25.70%), Eastern region (14.76% ~ 18.73%), and Outlying Islands (0.14% ~ 0.19%).
