The main objective of this project focused on continuing the river water quality monitoring for the 15 sites selected by the Kao-Ping River Basin Management Committee. In addition to the regular quarterly monitoring work for these points, other 24 sites were also sampled and analyzed in accordance with the Committee’s request. The routine water quality monitoring data from Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and Southern Region Water Resources Office of Water Resources Agency were also compiled together in order to evaluate the river water body quality as a whole.This plan is mainly aimed at the monitoring point of the selected sites of the high screen River stream for the monitoring of river water quality, the frequency is quarterly, and in line with the business requirements of the Management Committee, the other is the implementation of the point of temporary irregular sampling inspection; The test items are water temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, coliform, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total organic carbon, total phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, copper, zinc, mercury, silver, manganese, arsenic and selenium, etc.This report presents the quarterly river water work this year, totally 60 sites-points, 8 points of the sediment analysis in the dry season, and 24 points of the temporary irregular sampling inspection work.In general, most of the points in the upstream of Qi-Shan River, Mei-Nong River, Lao-Nong River, Ai-Liao River and Gao-Ping River mainstream were in good condition, mostly in non- (or slightly-) polluted level. However, due to part of the points being affected by higher suspended solids contents, the pollution levels of some rivers were downgraded to medium-polluted level from non- (or slightly-) polluted level. The water quality of midstream and downstream of Gao-Ping River was worsen due to the organic pollutants flew from Wu-Luo drainage, Niou-Chou river, and Wan-Dan drainage. The water quality in the upstream of Gao-Ping River Weir (C02) maintains in a certain lever. However, in the downstream, the RPI risen quickly, which indicated the pollutants flowing into main stream.The results of this year water quality monitoring shows that heavy metal Magnesium is in a high level at almost all the monitoring sites, at the confluence of the Mei-Nong River Creek and the San-Di-Men Bridge, there is a case of excessive lead, which is related to the interference of suspended solids; some sites are affected by the short-term weather system (rainfall scour), resulting in higher suspension solids concentrations, thus making their pollution levels not (slightly) subject to moderate contamination. As for the main stream of Gao-Ping River Creek test station by tributary (Wu-Luo creek drainage and the Banten drainage) of the cattle is slightly worse than the water, and the main pollutant concentrations of tributaries Vulo drainage, Niu-Chou Brook and Banten drainage are generally higher than other stations, which are the main polluted river sections and the main pollution sinks. The monitoring of heavy metal of the sediment during dry season in March showed the high level of zinc and copper in Niu-Chou River. The second sampling test in October showed that heavy metal concentration in sediment were all decreased. The sources of the pollutants are needed to be verified.The temporary irregular sampling inspection work was carried out 24 points. In March 4, the water samples under Shongyuan bridge and Wanda bridge were sampled, and the results showed the water chemicals were not the cause of bird’s death around this area. The other irregular sampling inspection work carried around the river sediment excavation area, and the results showed the river sediment excavation work do not significantly affect the river water quality. The other two water sampling trips were to test the water quality change affecting by river digging or bank construction. The results showed that the digging or construction work did not affect the river water quality. The final sampling trip was to retest the serious polluted sites, and the results showed that the water quality of these sampling sites did not improved. The project will also bring together the routine water quality monitoring data of the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan and the Water Resources Bureau of the Department of Economic Affairs in Southern District for a comprehensive assessment of the overall quality of river water.
