Due to rapid economic growth and high population density in Taiwan metropolises, the urban heat island (UHI) effect has become more and more significant. Hence, the frequency of the afternoon thunderstorm events increased results from the behavior of vertical convection in the atmosphere changed. For the purpose of preventing urban flood damage, the influence of the UHI on the climate and the hydrological process in Taiwan is evaluated to investigate the impacts of UHI on urban flooding and water resource in this project.
In this project, Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is applied to simulate the temporal and spatial distributions of rainfall for various land-use types and various anthropogenic heat source conditions. In addition, a short rainfall period and a heavy rainfall event are defined herein. From observed rainfall data, the variation of the frequency of the afternoon thunderstorm events is detected using statistical approaches. The Taipei metropolis is selected as the study area. The evaluation approaches of the UHI affecting the climate, hydrological processes and urban flooding in the study area are developed in this project.
