Dikes are used to protect people lives and properties from flooding and overflow. The design of dikes is often based on two-dimensional (2D) drawings. Recently, building Information Modeling (BIM), which utilizes digitization and parametric technology, has presented its effectiveness in three-dimensional (3D) visualization and data storage/acquisition to support design, construction, and maintenance for building projects. To enhance the design quality of dikes, this research investigates the feasibility of applies BIM to the design of a dike project that is located on Touqian river basin.This feasibility studies includes four major parts: (1) integrating BIM with digital terrain data, (2) using BIM to support design activities, (3) using BIM to output design drawings, and (4) applying BIM to generate budget documents. The research findings of these four parts are described in detail as below.1. Feasibility of integrating BIM with digital terrain dataThe available digital terrain data of the Touqian river basin are digital elevation model (DEM) data, which are in 2D matrix format (.asc). Because the BIM software package (that is Autodesk Revit) that is suggested by this research can read only the topographic data in .xyz format, this study then develops Matlab equations to read the DEM data. The results have shown that integrating BIM with digital terrain data is feasible. 2. Feasibility of using BIM to support design activitiesDesign activities required in the design phase for a dike construction project are identified according to the Hydraulic Engineering Technical Specifications published by the Water Resources Agency. Then, BIM is applied to each design activity for examining the benefits of using BIM. Additionally, to improve the effectiveness of applying BIM, this study develops a database that comprises 41 built-in BIM objects for various dike components. Furthermore, several BIM uses have been investigated in great detail for dike design, including the selection of design alternatives, design collaboration, change orders, clash detection, structural calculations, 3D visualization/ roaming, and 4D schedule simulation.3. Feasibility of using BIM to output design drawings The design drawings that are required for a dike design project are the drawings of plan views, drawings of topographic cross section views, drawings of dike cross section views and drawings of detailed dike components. The results have displayed that using BIM to output these design drawings is feasible, and it can produce the identical 2D drawings that are generated by conventional CAD method.4. Feasibility of applying BIM to generate budget documentsThis part focuses on the quantity take-offs (QTO) for the steel, formwork, concrete and earthwork cost items. This investigation has also indicated that using BIM can support the QTO for these cost items, and assist in developing the budget documents. Notably, conducting the QTO task for earthwork requires intensive judgment in determining the right amount of soil to remove or refill. Overall, this investigation has concluded that it is beneficial to apply BIM to support several design activities for a dike design project. The advantages of using BIM include information storage/acquisition, 3D visualization, 4D simulation and quantity take-off, and so on. Notably however, these benefits are identified by considering BIM as only a supportive role or an information exchange platform, and the design decisions still highly rely on designers’ experience.Concerning that the uses of BIM for dike design is still not mature, this study suggests a four-phase plan to meet practical needs step by step. First, in the study phase (early phase), we suggest to implement BIM education/training programs and conduct further in-depth research studies. Second, in the promotion phase, some BIM-based case projects should be used to promote the benefits of BIM to design companies and examine these companies’ BIM abilities. Third, in the mid-term phase, BIM is suggested to be used in each dike-design project that is outsourced to a design company. Finally, in the long-term phase, BIM must be applied to each dike-design project that is outsourced to a design company.
