Taipei City,with a population of nearly a million,is the most important city on this island.Yet the city and surrounding towns suffered the most serious flood damages during the past years.Whenever a typhoon sweeps over the Northern Taiwan,it brings a heavy precipitation over the basin,forcing the Tanshui River to overflow and inundate both banks and lower areas.Due to the rapid increase in population and more intensive use of land,the flood damamge shows a remarkable increase in these years. General informations on the river,floods and flood damages of record, existing improvements and study of flood control plan are briefly presented in this paper.
